A quick note before we begin: This piece is about the end of an era for me. It contains a brief mention of the suicidal thought I struggled with before the business I just closed turned my life around. Please read with care.

It is a strange feeling to fire yourself from a company you built from the ground up.

That is what I did today. I accepted my last order, closed the checkout, made the landing page announcing the site’s closure live, and with that, the ecommerce business that consumed my life for most of the last decade is gone.

It feels weirdly quiet.

The only sound in the room is the low hum of my playlist, where the shuffle function just landed on Pompeii by Bastille - an allegory for stagnation, loss and fear for the future. It feels really relevant to me right now. As I sit here writing this, I find myself ruminating on one specific line:

“Oh, where do we begin? The rubble or our sins?”

I guess, in my case, I can do both at once.

A Brief History of Mine

When I started my business in 2017, I never thought I’d be here today. I had attempted to start 4 different businesses in the preceding 5 years, and had failed at all of them.

By the end of 2016, my savings were nearly gone. I remember thinking if even this business failed, I’d get a job. And if I couldn’t do even that? Well, my apartment windows had no grilles.

In an out of character moment, I responded to a marketing guru’s email about starting an online business. He did not make casual promises that I’d earn $400 an hour working from home doing next to nothing. I’d have to work hard, put in the digital elbow grease, and be prepared to invest money. It felt authentic and different, so I gave it a chance.

In hindsight, I lucked out. How many marketing emails for online courses end up doing what they promised? But this one delivered. Within 3 months, I’d made $15,000, enough to cover the cost of the course, the cost of starting up an online shop and the ads I ran to it.

Things accelerated quickly. By the end of the year, the store had pulled in $700,000 in revenue.

Those first five years were like something out of a dream. I went from having next to nothing to clearing six-figure profits while working maybe two to four hours a day. E-commerce up until the early 2020s was a largely unregulated Wild West. Technical barriers to entry were higher and competition was low on ad platforms. There were hiccups, of course, but nothing that took more than a week or two to resolve (there’s a reason I avoid PayPal to this day).

I remember wondering if I was just incredibly lucky. Surely, money couldn’t be this easy to make? Were the ‘wealth mindset gurus’ actually right?

Looking back through the lens of BaZi, I realize it had nothing to do with ‘mindset.’ I was a disruptive ‘Hurting Officer’ operating in a loosely-regulated environment which the ‘Officers’ (regulators) had yet to notice. It was the absolute perfect ecosystem for my chart to bypass traditional labor and print money.

In 2017, fresh off the high of suddenly making the most I had in a single month, I paid for a consultation with a master regarded for his technical analysis. The analysis was very positive for that 10 year period. He told me I was not destined for “great wealth”, but I would definitely be able to earn a very good living that decade. The harder I worked, he said, the more I’d earn.

However, he also warned me about losses in 2023, and to prepare for my business collapsing at the end of my 10-Year Luck Cycle. He told me to find secure sources of income before I transited into the next luck pillar in 2026. He ominously described it as likely to be one of the most difficult periods of my life.

Because I wasn’t knowledgeable about BaZi at the time, I saw it as predictive fortune telling. I figured yes, BaZi can provide an idea of what was to come, but since I was aware of the coming pitfalls, I just needed to be careful with spending decisions and work hard. It’d be fine. After all, things were going so well, how bad could it get?

Talk about famous last words.

2023, 2024 and 2025 contained the Wood element mixed with unfavourable elements or combinations with my natal chart. And I was living out the exact textbook definition of a chart under siege.

Wood is my Officer element, and it is the most destructive element for a chart like mine. My natal chart is wired for disruptive entrepreneurship. It contains an auspicious structure where my creative rebellion (Hurting Officer) directly generates my Wealth (伤官生财), while completely bypassing traditional authority (伤官伤尽).

The major drawback to such a chart structure is its sensitivity to the Officer element. This star represents the establishment, the law, and regulatory bodies. The “Hurting Officer” represents creative and critical output that tends to challenge or bypass established rules. When the rebel sees an officer or vice versa, they naturally enter conflict. The dynamic of a heavy Hurting Officer chart meeting Officer elements in the Luck or Annual Pillars is a textbook indicator for lawsuits, platform issues, and trouble with authorities.

2023 came, and the slow, insidious decline began. High on the fumes of a record seven-figure year in 2022, I made decisions based on the rose-tinted assumption that the growth was permanent.

I made the cardinal sin of business: I stopped tracking my numbers closely and assumed higher top-line revenue meant higher bottom-line profit. Thinking I had cash to burn, I burned it. Expensive ad agencies that didn’t deliver. Careless accountants. Premium courses from “gurus” I never finished. Expensive meals for friends and family. I was spending money I hadn't actually made.

Revenue suddenly dropped by half in 2024 after Meta altered its ad algorithm. I added more products and hired agencies to improve my advertising, to no avail. At the same time, my living situation with a former friend turned toxic, entirely draining the mental bandwidth I desperately needed to keep the ship afloat.

Just when I thought I had stabilized the business in 2025, the floor fell out. The De Minimis exception was eliminated, and new tariffs were enacted. Operating costs spiked, and when we finally had to pass those costs onto customers, conversions tanked. To make matters worse, structural mistakes I’d made in 2023 - like opening a foreign subsidiary - came back to bite me with a vengeance. Even as I scrambled to consolidate, the very architecture of the company made it impossible to stop the bleeding.

I received baseless DMCAs on products from competitors with similar designs. A cease and desist letter arrived finding issue with the name of a bestselling product I’d sold for years, and used a fairly common word in the name.

Then a major legal entanglement came looking for me. Of all the issues I had imagined a small ecommerce business would encounter, this was not one of them. It truly brought to mind what the columnist Mary Schmich wrote in her iconic column Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young: “The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.”

My lawyer looked at the case, told me it wasn’t fair and the tactics used were not entirely above board. But, it would cost me more to fight in a foreign court, and she advised me to settle for a relatively small sum. It was small to them, but it wiped out what little profit I had made that year.

Looking back, the astrology was literal. 2025 was an Yi Si (乙巳) year - bringing my Direct Officer star sitting over my Indirect Resource. That combination interacting with my natal chart is a blaring siren for legal entanglements, platform and regulatory issues, and paperwork disputes.

As late as January this year, I had thought the business could survive even with the new Fuyin (伏吟) decade I found myself in. A Fuyin is a duplication of a pillar in your natal chart, and indicates a forced period of introspection and confrontation with the self. It is considered one of the more difficult periods a person can go through in BaZi.

But I’d made it out of the Wood years battered, but alive. The legal case was behind me, and revenue was stabilizing. I knew the decade was not one for capital-intensive, aggressive expansion, but maybe I could consolidate, work on bootstrapping my next idea while keeping the ecommerce business as a small source of income.

Then, the death blow arrived. The Fuyin was demanding its toll.

It’s still too recent for me to talk about it, but getting blindsided by yet another major issue just as I was getting back on my feet was the final straw, even for someone with a chart as stubborn as mine. Having so many unprecedented crises stack up in such a short timeframe - not when I was well-resourced enough to absorb the hit, but exactly when I could least afford it - was a blaring signal to stop.

The universe was punching me in the face with signs that I could not hold onto a business model that was fundamentally misaligned with who I am, and I could no longer ignore them.

The Trap of the “Hustle” Mentality

This is the part of the story where the modern business “hustle culture” gets people killed.

If you listen to LinkedIn influencers and self-proclaimed mentors, the answer to hitting a massive wall of financial losses and legal issues is to push harder. “Grind it out.” “Never surrender.” “Pivot and fight.”

When your chart enters a phase where your wealth elements are actively being attacked and your legal risk is at its absolute peak, fighting the current is financial suicide, as my first quarter numbers and unexpected “Rob Wealth” events can attest.

If your luck pillar dictates that your wealth will be drained, something is going to take your money. You only have two choices: let a lawsuit, a bad market, or a competitor bleed you dry, or take control of the narrative and close the tap yourself.

So, I fired myself.

On the advice of my legal and financial teams - and in total alignment with my own reading of my BaZi chart - I initiated the shutdown of the business.

A Forced Reckoning

To say the last 3 years have been among the most difficult of my life is putting it mildly. It is said that a new luck pillar, especially a very favourable or unfavourable one, can be felt during the years transiting into it.

That was certainly the case for me.

As the “hundred disasters” promised in the classical texts unfolded, my professional and personal life became a battlefield. Drama in one sphere influenced the other, endlessly draining my resources and bandwidth.

I didn’t just lose money. I lost friends as it became apparent to me that I was running on fumes dealing with their entitlement, chaos and lack of regulation in addition to my failing business. I went low-contact with family who, I realized, had done nothing but put me down since I was a child, regardless of how hard I tried to win their approval. The ex-friend who rented my spare room exposed fractures in my relationship that neither my partner nor I realized were there, setting off a chain reaction that ultimately forced us to take a break.

My partner pushed me into therapy around the time I discovered how I could use BaZi as a tool for self-discovery, and I was forced to confront how my lifelong lack of boundaries and poor sense of self created the situations I found myself in.

I had no idea just how much damage my dysfunctional childhood had done to me. It had affected the way I perceived people, communicated, and set boundaries. I believe there comes a point in adulthood where we have to stop blaming our family and take the wheel. But the truth is, when your foundation is built on trauma, it is not an easy system to rewrite. The untangling takes as long as it takes, and for me, it took until my 40s.

The ecommerce business that saved my life was hastily cobbled together in survival mode. It was a life raft. But a life raft, even an unintentionally well made one, is designed to float down a gentle stream.

It isn’t designed to navigate a Category 5 hurricane, and it certainly isn’t meant to be lived on forever. The universe - through the brutal mechanics of my chart - was systematically stripping away the things I was desperately clinging to. It was forcing me to ask a terrifying question:

Who am I without this business, and what do I actually want to build now that I’m back at the drawing board?

What Happens Now?

Closing a business you ran for nearly a decade is painful. It comes with grief, a bruised ego, and no small amount of anxiety. But it is also incredibly liberating.

I knew I was making the right move when I envisioned shutting down the site and doing something entirely new. Just the act of imagining waking up and not feeling anxious over Meta ad performance, supply chain delays, or sudden platform issues made me feel a peace I hadn’t felt in years.

Conversely, when I found myself spending my spare time decoding BaZi, analyzing complex charts, and discussing the mechanics of human destiny with other practitioners, I was electrified. The idea of sharing what I’ve learned, helping people untangle their own source code, and building a living out of it didn’t feel like a grind - it felt like alignment.

Right now, my chart does not support capital-intensive expansion, physical inventory, or high-overhead traditional businesses. It demands defensive maneuvers regarding traditional wealth. But in BaZi, when the “Wealth” star is under siege, the most strategic pivot you can make is to lean entirely into “Resource” (knowledge and study) and “Output” (writing, creating, and advising).

So, I am not hibernating. I am pivoting to a deeply lean model that relies on my own intellectual capital.

Here is what I am doing now:

1. Closing the Loop

I am legally and financially finalizing the dissolution of the past eight years to ensure no liabilities or energetic dead weight follows me into my next phase.

2. Publishing the Code

I am building a lean research and writing platform focused on translating classical BaZi into a modern, structured framework for understanding timing, personality, business, relationships, and life transitions.

One thing I realized during my own collapse is how inaccessible this knowledge often is. Many people encounter Chinese metaphysics through vague social media content or expensive consultations that leave them more dependent on the practitioner than empowered by the framework itself.

I want to experiment with a different approach.

Instead of treating BaZi as something mystical that only a “master” can interpret, I am exploring ways to turn charts into structured, machine-readable systems that people can continue engaging with on their own - including through AI tools.

Part of what I am building involves:

• Translating classical chart mechanics into modern, actionable language.

• Creating structured chart datasets and tailored prompts.

• Helping people use AI as an ongoing tool for self-reflection and strategic thinking.

The goal is not to replace human judgment, but to make this framework more interactive, transparent, and accessible than the traditional consultation model that only people with hundreds of dollars to spare can afford.

The Long View

Luck pillars are cyclical. I’ve discovered my chart is one of those highly sensitive structures that experiences intense volatility during unfavorable periods. But the key word is “cyclical.”

This hostile phase will eventually give way to a favorable shift. I am not merely waiting for it to pass. By consolidating my resources now, I am preserving my mental and financial capital to lay the foundations for my next phase. I am preparing the ground now, so that when the weather finally clears, I have the capital and the clarity to launch something that isn't just new, but built to last.

Three years ago, a BaZi master I deeply trusted told me to stop wasting time with my partner.

The bottom dropped out of my stomach when I saw his message. I knew my partner had their difficulties, so I did not expect a glowing pronouncement of their chart being “elite” or “high quality.” But neither was I expecting a chart so bad, the master would pronounce a death sentence for our relationship.

What shocked me the most was the sheer disconnect from reality. I was in a happy relationship with someone who loved me exactly for who I was, warts and all. They were kind, thoughtful, and deeply talented. They certainly didn’t fit the mold of the lazy, irredeemable layabout the reading painted them to be.

He claimed my partner’s chart was so exceptionally weak that he refused to even conduct a proper compatibility analysis. When I pushed back and asked questions to understand the actual dynamics at play rather than blindly accepting his fatalism, he grew angry. He threw a fit over a question about a single character on their chart, abruptly voided the remainder of my consultation, and walked away with my nearly $800 non-refundable fee.

To outline the rest of that disastrous consultation would take an entire article, but the TL;DR is this: he deemed my partner a lost cause with zero capacity for personal growth, incapable of adding value to my life. When I asked about their prospects in the career they aspired to, the master condescendingly asked if my partner even knew how to use the basic tools of the trade.

My partner had earned a professional qualification in that exact field as a teenager.

The most dangerous part of this encounter wasn’t just the insult. It was the intellectual laziness. This master was so caught up in his preconceived notion of who my partner was that he was entirely blind to their actual talent and the evidence contradicting his assessment.

He had calculated the chart correctly. But because the chart was highly unconventional and difficult, he chose to attack and insult rather than apply the nuance required to actually understand the human being he was condemning.

Here is the truth: My partner is not perfect, and their chart is not an easy one. We are currently on a break, navigating our joint issues.

Some of those issues were actually exacerbated by the flawed reading itself. When my partner stumbled, living out the flaws shown in their chart, my own insecurities whispered that maybe the master was correct about them, and no matter how hard we tried, they could never be a good partner.

There are signs in our charts that support a breakup, but none of those reasons have anything to do with my partner failing to bring value to my life. The happiness they brought me and the emotional growth I experienced with them for the better part of four years put paid to that lie. Nor does their actual chart dictate an inability to build a functional, meaningful career.

When I finally learned to read BaZi myself, I looked at the exact same chart and everything clicked.

The chart wasn’t easy. It indicated major internal friction and structural challenges. But where the master saw a permanent death sentence, classical mechanics revealed something else entirely: an artist who was simply not wired for success in a conventional corporate environment.

But, it supported the path my partner had naturally gravitated to and was working towards.

The master didn’t see a struggling human being with a fighting chance. Because of his rigid, fatalistic idea of what a “good” life should look like, he looked at a highly complex chart and saw only a professional NEET leeching off a caretaker.

Fast forward three years: My partner went back to university, is a straight-A student, and recently organized a major event that earned unprecedented testimonials from industry professionals. They have been accepted into a Master’s program. They still battle their demons every day, but they are trying, growing, and achieving.

Does that sound like a lost cause? Or does it sound like a practitioner who fundamentally misread a human being?

After I learned BaZi for myself, I realized why Chinese Metaphysics has taken on such an unsavory reputation for many. From the lack of regulation, to the templates and shortcuts modern schools advocate, to a total disregard for professionalism and ethics - there are so many ways a BaZi “master” can get things wrong and bank on the ignorance of their clients to get away with it.

Before you let a stranger dictate your fate, here is why your BaZi master might be misreading your source code:

1. Schools That Oversimplify BaZi

In the J-drama Straight to Hell, the protagonist is warned as a beginner that it takes at least ten years of studying the classical texts before one can properly tell fortunes.

Why? Because while the Zi Ping school - the most ubiquitous system of BaZi - offers a standardized way to read charts, those standard methods simply cannot cover all cases. There are myriad exceptions to the rules, and subtle thermodynamic forces to consider far beyond basic elemental balancing. In fact, the explanatory notes in the foundational Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真诠) state that using standard seasonal methods to identify a chart’s “Useful God” only works for about 70 to 80 percent of charts.

Before the age of digitization, search tools and AI, a master had to spend years memorizing entire volumes so that they could correctly identify a chart’s structure in a reasonable amount of time, as well as any possible exceptions that applied to it.

Yet today, many modern schools peddle courses that supposedly elevate you to practitioner status in a matter of months, if not weeks. These schools teach simplified, templated methods. They will look at a Fire Day Master, count three Fire elements, an Earth season, and a single Water element, and immediately declare the Day Master “Strong.” They then blindly apply the textbook cure: drain the strong Day Master to achieve balance.

This completely ignores the actual physics of the chart. Is that Fire burning in the dead of winter, desperately trying to keep the ecosystem from freezing? Is the Earth wet and muddy, or dry and cracked? You cannot evaluate a chart’s structure just by tallying up elements like a scorecard.

Even worse, when this templated approach inevitably fails to align with the client’s lived reality, the master’s ego takes over. Instead of investigating further, they will insist the client must have the wrong birth hour, or accuse the client of being in denial about their life.

Rather than listening and putting in the effort to verify the chart, they attempt to gaslight the client’s square peg into the round hole of their lazy math.

2. The Trap of Fatalism

Having the correct chart is only half the battle, interpreting it requires nuance and empathy. Unfortunately, the commercial industry is rife with practitioners who see a difficult chart and immediately make fatalistic assumptions about the client.

Classical BaZi acknowledges that some charts are smooth and some are turbulent. A chart with heavy elemental clashes or weak favorable elements simply means the individual will face more obstacles to success in life. They might have to take an unconventional route.

But lazy practitioners equate a difficult or unconventional life path with an inherently flawed character. They look at a turbulent chart and declare the person a lost cause, incapable of growth.

This is a massive interpretive leap. A chart might indicate that someone will face severe career hurdles or emotional battles, but it cannot dictate that they are incapable of loving, learning, or actively working to overcome those battles.

When a master hands you a reading of apocalypse for your life or relationship, they are not reading your destiny - they are projecting their own inability to navigate the unconventional and the complex.

3. Projecting Moral and Societal Values

BaZi was codified during dynastic, feudal China. It was a society that prioritized clan survival, male heirs, and absolute obedience to the hierarchy.

Many modern masters have entirely failed to update this sociological framework. Instead of reading the objective mechanics of the elements, they project their own conventional, often highly conservative moral values onto the client.

They will label a late bloomer’s chart a “failure” or “wasted potential” simply because it doesn’t indicate a traditional corporate ascent during their twenties. They will look at a challenging luck phase and decide your real-world struggles are a personal choice, claiming your hardships are entirely your fault for refusing to grow. They will tell a fiercely independent woman that her chart is “cursed” to harm her husband, simply because her elements naturally rebel against the “Authority” star.

Your chart is not a moral compass. It is simply a guide to your psychology and a map of your potential. The elements do not care about the modern white-picket-fence ideal. They simply indicate the mechanics of how you process the world - and how you can build your best life, even if it is a highly unconventional one.

Yet, the commercial industry routinely crosses the line from energetic analysis into outright moral condemnation.

When a practitioner publicizes the idea that a difficult or ‘unevolved’ birth chart equates to being “human garbage”, they aren’t practicing metaphysics - they are practicing cosmic eugenics. They imply that your struggles aren’t lessons to be managed, but a definitive proof of your worthlessness. In which case, why bother paying a BaZi master just to be condemned?

Social norms dictate the manifestation of a chart. If a master is not actively interpreting ancient mechanics through a 21st-century socio-economic lens and offering relevant advice, their reading is useless.

Take the Hurting Officer (伤官) star. In classical texts, an unchecked Hurting Officer is viewed as disastrous - especially for women. It represents a rebellious, often intelligent energy that actively attacks the “Direct Officer” (which represents rules, tradition, and the husband). In ancient China, a person with this chart was a traitor, a rebel, or a cursed spouse.

But what is an unchecked Hurting Officer today? It is commonly found in the charts of tech disruptors. It is the brilliant entrepreneur with ADHD symptoms who shatter outdated industry models to build an empire. It is the stand-up comic who gains celebrity through subversive social critique. And in the modern world, either gender can weaponize this energy for massive success at any age.

A chart that would have gotten you executed in the Ming Dynasty might be exactly what makes you a multi-millionaire today.

4. The Echo Chamber of the Career Fortune-Teller

There is a practical reality that clients often overlook when seeking high-level advice: Many masters have spent their entire adult lives in the metaphysical echo chamber.

If a practitioner has spent twenty years sitting behind a consultation desk, their understanding of the modern world and workplace is entirely theoretical - stitched together from ancient texts and the secondhand complaints of other clients.

If they have never navigated the cutthroat politics of climbing a modern corporate ladder, how can they accurately interpret a senior executive career bottleneck? If they have never built a scalable startup or managed complex operational overhead, how can they advise a founder on pivoting and bootstrapping models just by looking at a “Wealth” star? There is a massive difference between running a cash-upfront consulting practice and surviving the trenches of a competitive modern industry.

Worse yet, if a master has lived a highly conventional, sheltered life, they are fundamentally incapable of advising someone whose chart demands a radically unconventional path. They simply lack the lived vocabulary for it.

When you ask such a practitioner for life strategy, they usually default to safe, generic tropes: “Your chart needs Water, so you should work in shipping.” or “You will have issues with money. Find a source of passive income”. This isn’t strategy, it’s a parlor trick.

Your BaZi chart is a map of potential, but a map is only as good as the guide reading it. You cannot expect a guide who has never left the theoretical village to successfully guide you through the complex, unique terrain of a modern, divergent life.

5. The Fatal Flaw: They Don’t Know You

Ultimately, the greatest reason a master misreads your chart is that they do not take the time to know you.

A BaZi chart does not exist in a vacuum. It is a blueprint, but it is built upon by your upbringing, your free will, your trauma, and your environment. Two people can have the exact same chart, and one might channel their chart’s volatile obsessiveness into building a revolutionary business, while the other might succumb to it and end up in prison.

If you meet a master that lacks empathy and a desire to understand people who think differently from them, no matter how good their technical reading, they are unlikely to give good advice for your unique life.

A good reading should be a two-way dialogue. But too many masters view themselves as untouchable authorities dispensing unquestionable pronouncements from on high, delivering skewed, fear-based readings that offer no actionable strategy to actually improve your life.

The Solution: Become the Architect of Your Own Destiny

You do not have to leave your destiny in the hands of a practitioner who does not care to get to know you, refuses to check their math, and projects their own limitations onto your potential.

This isn’t to say human practitioners are inherently obsolete. A genuinely skilled master - one who can observe your mannerisms and personality as part of meticulously verifying your data, interprets the classics through a modern lens, brings a diverse life experience and treats your reading as a collaborative strategy session - is a wonderful resource. But finding a mentor of that caliber is rare, often prohibitively expensive, and still requires handing your vulnerability over to a stranger.

This is where AI changes the game entirely.

We no longer have to rely on a human middleman to access the mechanics of our own lives. By learning just the foundational concepts - your Day Master, your elements, the 10 Gods, and the environmental shifts of your Luck Pillars - you can leverage AI to do the heavy mathematical lifting and objective cross-referencing.

Some might argue that AI lacks human intuition. I argue that AI lacks human bias.

An AI does not judge your relationship style or your current lack of success. It does not have a fragile ego to protect. It does not project patriarchal baggage onto your relationship or career goals. It simply calculates the dynamics of your chart, and provides an unfiltered, objective mirror of your cognitive baseline when you ask it to.

More powerfully, it has the ability to draw from modern psychological and therapeutic texts, combining them with the vast repository of human experience shared online. When done right, and the conversation shaped properly, the result is a holistic, modern interpretation completely stripped of the personal biases and fragile egos that so often color human analysis.

True psychological “Medicine” isn’t found in a master’s validation - it’s found in understanding yourself. When you use AI to map your chart, you bring the empathy, the intuition, and the lived experience relevant to yourself. The AI simply brings the math and suggests the strategy, helping you build an actionable plan. Provided you know enough of the basics to steer it accurately and check for hallucinations, of course.

Stop paying arrogant strangers to condemn you to a bad destiny. Learn the code, partner with the machine, and become the architect of your own life.

Over the last four articles, we have built an understanding of the complete engine of your BaZi chart. We mapped the dashboard (the Palaces), learned the physics engine (the Five Elements), translated the alphabet (the Stems and Branches), and identified your inner team (the Day Master and 10 Gods).

But your Natal Chart is entirely static. It is a snapshot of the exact moment you were born. It shows your capacity, your psychology, and your baseline stats, but it doesn’t tell you when things are going to happen.

A static chart cannot explain why an entrepreneur struggles for a decade, then suddenly builds a multi-million-dollar empire in two years. To understand the events of your life, we have to introduce the final dimension: Time.

In classical BaZi, time is not just a measurement; it is an active, kinetic force. To understand how to strategize your future, you need to understand the difference between your base stats, the current campaign setting, and the Dungeon Master’s (DM) random encounters.

1. The Character Sheet: Your Natal Chart (四柱)

Your Natal Chart (the Year, Month, Day, and Hour pillars) is your core Character Sheet with your base stats. It is the build you rolled at birth, and it does not change mid-game.

If your chart has a powerful “Seven Killings” structure, you are built like a frontline Berserker or Tank - designed to thrive in combat, handle massive aggro, and create order out of chaos. If you have an “Eating God” structure, you are built like a high-Intelligence Mage or Bard - designed for strategy, utility, refinement, and backline execution.

You cannot re-roll your character sheet. But whether your specific build ever utilizes its maximum potential depends entirely on the campaign setting you are forced to play in.

2. The Campaign Modules: The 10-Year Luck Pillars (大运)

When you generate your BaZi chart, you will see a section at the bottom broken into 10-year blocks. These are the Da Yun (大运), commonly translated as “Luck Pillars.”

Let’s clear up a massive mistranslation: “Luck” here does not mean rolling a natural 20. The character Yun (运) literally means movement, transport, or cycle. These are your Major Campaign Modules, and the universe is the DM determining what they are and when you’ll have to adventure through them.

The 10-Year Luck Pillars represent the macro-environment - the overarching storyline and biome you will be navigating for an entire decade. Every ten years, the “meta” of your life shifts. A new Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch arrive, bringing new 10 Gods into your reality and changing the rules of the board.

• The Favorable Module (The Buff): If your specific character build desperately needs Fire to be balanced (your Useful God), you aren't a Fire Mage - you’re a Solar Paladin who spawned with zero mana regeneration. When you enter a 10-year Fire Luck Pillar, you finally step out of the dark and into a sun-drenched biome. The environment is now providing the exact resource your build was missing. Your stats are passively buffed. Your decisions naturally yield critical hits, you finally have the mana to cast your ultimate abilities, and you level up rapidly.

• The Hostile Module (The Nerf): What if that same Solar Paladin rolls a 10-year Luck Pillar made entirely of heavy, restrictive Water elements? The DM just dropped you into a massive underwater dungeon. The environment is actively suppressing your core mechanics and draining your light. It doesn’t mean a guaranteed game over, but it does mean your primary offensive stats are severely nerfed. You cannot rush headfirst into combat. You have to switch tactics, lean heavily on your party, farm resources safely, and play a strict defensive survival game until the campaign shifts.

3. The Random Encounters: The Annual Pillar (流年)

If the Luck Pillar is the 10-year campaign setting, the Annual Pillar (流年 - Liu Nian, literally “Flowing Year”) is the Dungeon Master throwing a set encounter at the table.

The Annual Pillar applies to everyone on Earth. For example, 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon (Jia Chen). 2025 is the Year of the Wood Snake (Yi Si). The Annual Pillar interacts with your specific character sheet and your specific campaign module to create a unique outcome.

How it triggers events: The Annual Pillar acts as the catalyst. You might be playing in a fantastic 10-Year Campaign (a highly favorable module), but if the Annual Pillar brings a clash to your chart, you may walk into a sudden boss fight or trap. You might take some HP damage, lose some gold, or face a temporary debuff, but because the broader campaign setting supports your build, you heal and recover quickly.

Conversely, if you are struggling through a hostile 10-Year module and a terrible Annual Pillar arrives, that random encounter can easily cause a party wipe. You could lose everything and have to start over if you aren’t prepared.

Annual Pillars can also bring fortuitous encounters if they are favourable to your chart. You might experience the equivalent of finding treasure in unexpected places, rolling a nat 20 on whatever you do or simply find that the difficult terrain you’ve been navigating is now easier to traverse.

While a Luck Pillar may represent the overall theme or terrain for the decade, your lived experience during that decade is more influenced by the annual pillar.

The Targeting System: How We Forecast

This is exactly why BaZi is not vague fortune-telling. When I write about the upcoming year or month, I am essentially reading the universe’s campaign notes to see what is coming and how it targets the static Palaces on your character sheet.

Because the elements are systematic, we can track the DM’s math.

• If the incoming Annual Pillar clashes with your Month Pillar, we know the encounter is targeting your Career. We forecast job changes, office politics, or issues with superiors.

• If the incoming Pillar combines with your Day Pillar, the encounter is targeting you or your relationship with your spouse. We forecast new romantic relationships, relationship issues, or shifts in your home life.

The Strategist’s Mindset

By understanding the Matrix of Time, you stop being an NPC at the mercy of the plot and become a min-maxing player of your own life.

If you know a severe encounter is targeting your Career Palace next year, you do not rage-quit your job. You pre-buff. You upskill, you avoid risky aggro in the office, and you play defensively until the event passes.

If you know a massive 10-year favorable Campaign is starting, you take the calculated risks you’ve been putting off, because you know the board is finally optimized for your specific class.

BaZi is the ultimate life strategy guide. You cannot stop the universe from switching things up, but knowing what lies ahead allows you to equip the right gear for that phase of your journey.

If you have been following this series, you now have the tools to look at a BaZi chart without your eyes glazing over. You know the UI (the Palaces), the physics engine (the Generative and Destructive element cycles), and the alphabet (the Stems and the Branches).

But here is the catch: If you see a “Yang Fire” sitting in your Career Palace, what does that actually mean? Is Fire your money? Is it your boss? Is it your creative talent?

The answer is: It depends entirely on who YOU are. Bing (丙) Yang Fire means something very different to a Wood person (who fuels it) than it does to a Metal person (who is melted by it). To translate the raw code of the Five Elements into actual human behavior, careers, and relationships, we need to find your anchor.

We need to find the Day Master.

The Focal Point: The Day Master (日主)

Of the eight characters in your Natal Chart, the most important one is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar.

This is the Day Master (DM). This is you. It represents your core identity, your basic ego, and the lens through which you experience the universe. Everything else in the chart is calculated strictly by how it interacts with your Day Master.

If your Day Master is Yang Earth, then you are the mountain. Every other element in your chart is defined by what it does to the mountain.

Enter the “10 Gods” (十神)

When you run your chart through a BaZi calculator, you will see dramatic terms printed next to the elements, like Direct Wealth, Hurting Officer, or Seven Killings.

In Chinese, the term is Shi Shen (十神). While Shen translates literally to “God” or “Spirit,” in BaZi, there are no literal deities hovering over your chart.

A much better translation is Archetypes. The 10 Gods are simply the psychological modules, behavioral patterns, and real-world factors that make up your life. They are generated by running the Five Elements through the “physics engine” we learned in Part II: Yin, Yang, and the Five Element Cycle (Wu Xing).

Because there are 5 elemental interactions, and each has a Yin and Yang polarity, we get the 10 Gods. Here is the definitive breakdown of your inner team:

1. The Peer Stars (The Element that is the SAME as the DM)

• What it is: If you are Wood, this is other Wood elements. It represents your confidence, your self-worth, your peers, your friends, and your competitors.

• The Two Gods:

  • Peer (同): Same polarity as you. Represents collaborative peers, networking, and steady self-esteem.

  • Rob Wealth (劫): Opposite polarity. A highly dramatic name for your competitive edge, ambition, and sometimes, the rivals who want to take what is yours.

2. The Output Stars (The Element the DM PRODUCES)

• What it is: If you are Water, you produce Wood. If you are Wood, you produce Fire. Output represents your intellect, your creativity, your performance, and your drive to create things outside of yourself. It is the engine of your actions.

• The Two Gods:

  • Eating God (食): Same polarity. Represents refined creativity, strategic thinking, deep focus, and the enjoyment of life’s pleasures.

  • Hurting Officer (伤): Opposite polarity. Represents disruptive innovation, rebellious energy, showmanship, and a desire to challenge the status quo.

3. The Wealth Stars (The Element the DM CONTROLS)

• What it is: If you are Wood, you control Earth (roots breaking the soil). If you are Water, you control Fire (water extinguishes fire). Wealth isn’t just money; it represents anything you desire to master, control, and organize. It is your physical assets, your execution, and your results.

• The Two Gods:

  • Indirect Wealth (偏财): Same polarity. Represents entrepreneurial drive, risk-taking, investments, and big-picture financial thinking.

  • Direct Wealth (正财): Opposite polarity. Represents a steady paycheck, meticulous management, responsibility, and operational logic.

4. The Authority Stars (The Element that CONTROLS the DM)

• What it is: If you are Wood, Metal chops and shapes you. If you are Fire, Water puts you out. This represents the forces that restrict you: discipline, laws, authority figures, bosses, and high-pressure environments. It is your capacity to handle stress and lead.

• The Two Gods:

  • Seven Killings (杀): Same polarity. The most intimidating name in BaZi! It simply represents extreme pressure, crisis management, aggressive action, and authority born through chaos.

  • Direct Officer (官): Opposite polarity. Represents following the rules, traditional management, diplomacy, systems, and administrative power.

5. The Resource Stars (The Element that PRODUCES the DM)

• What it is: If you are Wood, Water nourishes and grows you. If you are Fire, Wood burns to create you. This represents everything that supports you before you take action: your education, your mother, your health, institutions like your school or company, and your comfort zone.

• The Two Gods:

  • Indirect Resource (枭): Same polarity. Represents unconventional knowledge, intuition, abstract thinking, and deep, niche research.

  • Direct Resource (印): Opposite polarity. Represents traditional education, structured learning, certifications, empathy, and institutional support.

The “Aha!” Moment

Do you see how the matrix locks together?

This is why reading an annual horoscope that says, “Water is arriving this year, bringing good luck!” is absolute nonsense.

If an upcoming year brings a massive flood of Water energy, what does that mean?

• If your Day Master is Wood, Water is your Resource. You will likely spend the year studying, resting, or seeking mentorship.

• If your Day Master is Fire, Water is your Authority. You will face immense pressure, strict bosses, and demands for discipline.

• If your Day Master is Earth, Water is your Wealth. You will be focused on execution, conquering new markets, and managing assets.

Your chart is entirely relative to you.

By understanding your Day Master and the 10 Gods, you now have the complete vocabulary of classical BaZi. You know the UI, the physics, the alphabet, and the archetypes.

In Part I of this series, we mapped out the “UI” dashboard of your BaZi chart - the rows and columns that dictate the different areas of your life. In Part II, we looked under the hood to understand the physics engine powering it all: Yin, Yang, and the Five Elements.

But if you actually generate your BaZi chart, you won’t just see the words “Yang Fire” or “Yin Water” neatly printed in English. You will see a grid of specific Chinese characters.

To read the code, you need to know the alphabet.

In BaZi, this alphabet consists of 22 characters: the 10 Heavenly Stems and the 12 Earthly Branches. Let’s decode them.

The Surface Variables: The 10 Heavenly Stems

As we learned in the last article, the Heavenly Stems live on the top row of your chart. They represent pure, unmixed Qi, the life forces that constitutes all of existence. The stems on top represent the surface-level events, your public-facing personality, and what the world sees.

The stems represent your Conscious Mind and your overt behavior. It shows the traits you actively project, the decisions you make in the open, and the events that are visible to your peers. The elements here are 'pure' because they lack the messy, hidden complexities of your subconscious desires buried in the row of the Earthly Branches below.

There are exactly 10 Stems. Why 10? Because there are Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and two polarities (Yin and Yang). 5 x 2 = 10. It is that simple.

Here is the core alphabet of the Heavenly Stems:

• Jia (甲) & Yi (乙): Yang Wood (the towering, stubborn tree) and Yin Wood (the adaptable, climbing vine).

• Bing (丙) & Ding (丁): Yang Fire (the radiant, blazing sun) and Yin Fire (the focused, illuminating candle or forge).

• Wu (戊) & Ji (己): Yang Earth (the immovable, heavy mountain) and Yin Earth (the nurturing, fertile soil).

• Geng (庚) & Xin (辛): Yang Metal (the raw iron ore, the heavy axe) and Yin Metal (the refined, glittering jewelry or scalpel).

• Ren (壬) & Gui (癸): Yang Water (the crashing, unstoppable ocean) and Yin Water (the gentle, pervasive mist or rain).

When you look at the top row of your chart - especially your Day Master - you are looking at one of these 10 characters.

The Hidden Foundation: The 12 Earthly Branches

The bottom row of your chart is made up of the Earthly Branches. This is where we need to kill a massive pop-culture misconception.

The 12 Earthly Branches are commonly known as the Chinese Zodiac Animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig).

If you were born in the Year of the Dragon, I hate to break it to you: you do not possess the “magical spirit of a mythical lizard.” Despite what superstitious folklore would have you believe, being born in the year of the Dragon doesn’t predestine you for great things. Any “astrologer” who says so probably has a book of creative fiction to sell you.

Ancient Chinese scholars were brilliant astronomers, mathematicians, and agriculturists, not fantasy writers.

The animals are simply ancient mnemonic code words. They were designed as a shorthand tool to help the masses better understand and recall the cycles of time, the changing of the seasons, and complex elemental mixtures.

Each animal represents a specific month, season, and elemental energy:

• Spring (Wood Energy): Tiger (寅), Rabbit (卯), Dragon (辰)

• Summer (Fire Energy): Snake (巳), Horse (午), Goat (未)

• Autumn (Metal Energy): Monkey (申), Rooster (酉), Dog (戌)

• Winter (Water Energy): Pig (亥), Rat (子), Ox (丑)

When you see a “Tiger” in your chart, BaZi analysts aren’t looking at feline traits of self-reliance and independence. We are looking at the arrival of early Spring - a massive, explosive surge of Yang Wood energy. When we see a “Rat,” we are looking at the dead of Winter - pure, freezing Water energy.

Putting It Together: Reading a Pillar

Now that you know the alphabet, you can read the code.

A “Pillar” in BaZi is simply one Heavenly Stem sitting on top of one Earthly Branch.

For example, you have likely read annual forecasts stating that 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon (Jia Chen 甲辰). Before today, that might have sounded like mystical poetry. Now, you know exactly what the system is calculating.

• The Top (Stem): Jia (甲) - Pure Yang Wood.

• The Bottom (Branch): Chen (辰) - The Dragon, representing late Spring and Yang Earth.

2024 isn’t a magical lizard in a forest. It is a specific energetic patch: Yang Wood sitting on Yang Earth. If you remember the physics engine from our last article, you know that Wood controls Earth. Its roots violently penetrate the soil to extract nutrients. Therefore, the “Wood Dragon” is a pillar of tension, pressure, structural breakdown, and relentless growth.

You just read your first line of BaZi code.

Now that you know the elements, the polarities, and the alphabet, there is only one piece of the puzzle left before you can start strategizing your own life. In the previous article, we mapped out the components of a BaZi chart. We looked at the palaces, the rows, and the columns to understand where your career, your private life, and your 10-year luck cycles reside.

But a dashboard is just a display. To truly understand how BaZi works - and how to use it to strategize your life - you need to understand the code running underneath it.

Welcome to the underlying physics engine of Chinese Metaphysics: Yin, Yang, and the Five Elements.

The Polarity: Yin and Yang

Before we talk about elements, we have to talk about polarity. In pop culture, Yin and Yang are often misunderstood as “good vs. evil.” In reality, they simply different aspects of nature.

• Yang (阳): Active, outward, bright, fast, aggressive, and expanding. It is the sun, the roaring fire, the unyielding mountain.

• Yin (阴): Passive, inward, dark, slow, receptive, and contracting. It is the moon, the candlelight, the fertile soil.

Because Yin is associated with darkness and the feminine, popular media often uses it as a lazy shorthand for 'evil' or 'villainy.' This isn't ancient wisdom - it’s just human projection.

Equating Yin with malevolence stems from our primal fear of the dark, mixed with a heavy dose of historical misogyny. In BaZi, there is no morality attached to polarity.

Yin isn't the villain, it's the fertile soil where seeds germinate. It is the restorative rest that makes Yang's explosive action possible.

Every single element in your BaZi chart is either Yin or Yang. The polarity changes the expression of an element. For example, a Yang Wood Day Master can be visualized as a towering, study tree, while a Yin Wood person is often visualized as an elegant flower or flexible vine. A Yang water Day Master may be given the powerful, torrential properties of an ocean while a Yin water Day Master has the attributes of rain or mist.

The Building Blocks: Your Energetic DNA

The characters in a BaZi chart are a language describing your energetic DNA, built from five core components.

The Five Elements (Wu Xing): Everything in BaZi is expressed through Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. Each has a Yin or Yang polarity and represents different facets of life:

Wood: Growth, structure, discipline

Wood’s physical nature is defined as “curved and straight” (曲直), representing the structured growth of a tree. It is firm, yet flexible. It governs the constant of Benevolence (仁 - Ren). Each constant governs a person’s baseline psychology, worldview, and moral compass.

When Wood is strong and healthy in a chart, it creates a person who is generous, compassionate, and upright. It grants a structured, principled nature, but if it is too rigid or unbalanced, it manifests as stubbornness and an overly unyielding disposition.

Fire: Passion, expression, visibility

Fire is defined as “blazing upward” (炎上), representing visibility and outward energy. It governs the constant of Propriety (礼 - Li).

Fire’s psychological manifestation is described as quick, highly expressive, and spirited. It grants a person a radiant, majestic presence. However, if Fire is too strong, the passion becomes explosive, resulting in a fiery temper and restlessness.

Earth: Stability, nurturing, trust

Earth is defined as “sowing and reaping” (稼穑), representing the fertile ground that nurtures all life.

Earth governs the constant of Trust (信 - Xin). Its nature is heavy, thick, and highly stable. A balanced, healthy Earth Day Master produces a personality that is deeply reliable, sincere, and broad-minded. An imbalanced Earth chart can produce a person who is either hopelessly stubborn and foolish or deeply toxic, unreasonable, and completely untrustworthy.

Metal: Logic, justice, execution

Metal is defined as “following and altering” (从革), representing the forging of weapons and tools.

Metal governs the constant of Righteousness/Justice (义 - Yi). It has the traits of sharp execution, heroism, and a strict moral compass. It creates a personality that is highly logical, resolute, and decisive. If weak or flawed, it results in a lack of decision-making and inner toxicity.

Water: Wisdom, communication, flow

Water is defined as “moistening and flowing” (润下), representing fluidity, depth, and adaptability.

Water governs the constant of Wisdom (智 - Zhi). It creates a highly intelligent, intuitive, strategic, and deep-thinking individual. When imbalanced, it can indicate someone who is either a restless, manipulative drifter or an erratic, cowardly individual incapable of strategic thinking.

How the Elements Interact

These elements do not just sit passively on your chart. They are dynamic kinetic forces that constantly interact with one another.

There are two primary cycles that dictate how these elements behave. If you want to understand why your chart is considered strong or weak, why an element is considered beneficial or destructive, or why a specific year brings you massive success or immense frustration, you have to be aware of these two loops:

The Generative Cycle (The Production Cycle)

This is the cycle of creation, support, and resource. One element “mothers” or gives birth to the next, strengthening it.

• Water waters Wood (Trees grow).

• Wood feeds Fire (Logs burn).

• Fire produces Earth (Ash returns to soil).

• Earth bears Metal (Minerals form in the ground).

• Metal holds Water (Condensation forms on metal).

The Destructive Cycle (The Controlling Cycle)

This is the cycle of checks and balances. One element dominates, restricts, or shapes another.

Note that control does not mean bad. In BaZi, if an element is not controlled or disciplined, it runs wild and causes chaos. A chart with rampant fire without water to control or cool it down can manifest as a restless, impulsive individual prone to burnout.

• Water puts out Fire.

• Fire melts and forges Metal.

• Metal chops Wood.

• Wood breaks apart Earth (Roots penetrate the soil).

• Earth dams and directs Water.

How This Applies To You: The Core Players

So, you have a grid of elements that are constantly producing and controlling each other. How does that translate to you and your actual life?

This brings us to the most important components of BaZi analysis:

The Day Master (日主): Of the eight characters in your Natal Chart, one is the absolute most important: the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. This is the Day Master, and it represents you. Understanding your Day Master is the first step to decoding your chart. Everything else in the chart revolves around this single element.

The 10 “Gods” (十神): The other elements in your chart are interpreted based on their relationship to your Day Master. Using the Generative and Destructive physics we just learned, these relationships form the 10 Gods - not literal deities, but archetypes representing the key players on your “inner team” (such as Wealth, Output, Resource, Authority, and Companions).

All of the 10 Gods in a chart can have a positive or negative manifestation, despite what their names sound like. The energy of the “Hurting Officer” (伤官), for example, can create a rebellious, hyper critical personality that destroys relationships - or a creative mind that moves the needle in their chosen field.

The Useful God (用神): In the complex recipe of your chart, the element representing the Useful God is the single most important one. It’s the key ingredient that brings balance, unlocks potential, and helps remedy the chart’s inherent challenges.

By understanding the Five Elements and the cycles of production and control, you now have the tools to understand the mechanics of a chart. Every friend whom I’ve shown a BaZi (八字) chart to has had the same response: “What the f--- is this? I don’t know how to read it”.

In my previous post, we talked about BaZi as the ultimate RPG character sheet - a map of your base stats and the elemental environments you’ll encounter. But conceptually understanding that you have a “character sheet” is very different from actually knowing how to read the complex, mystical-looking grid of Chinese characters on your screen.

Today, we are looking at the UI. We are going to break down the “geography” of your chart so that the next time you generate one, you know exactly where to look to find your career potential, your private life, and the hidden mechanics driving your decisions.

What is a BaZi Chart?

The term BaZi (八字) literally means “Eight Characters.” These characters represent the unique energetic blueprint of the exact moment you were born - the specific year, month, day, and hour. This is why the system is also known as the “Four Pillars of Destiny,” with each pillar holding two characters.

When you look at this chart, you are essentially looking at a grid. Understanding how this grid is organized is the first step to reading the map of your life.

The Natal Chart

The Rows: Surface vs. Hidden

The chart is split horizontally into a top and bottom row.

The Heavenly Stems (Top Row): This represents the surface level. What people see, your outward personality, and events that are visible to everyone. The elements in the Heavenly Stems are pure Qi (energy), singular and unmixed in their focus.

You can think of them as the leaves and branches of a tree. They are what everyone sees swaying in the wind. However, for these visible traits or events to have true staying power, they must be supported and ‘rooted’ by the foundation below.

The Earthly Branches (Bottom Row): This is where the famous Chinese Zodiac animals live. Think of this row as the hidden foundation of your life: your private reality, your deepest feelings, and your secret motivations. Each animal in your chart holds a main Qi energy, but also ‘Hidden Stems’ - sub-Qi elements that act like locked treasure chests (or hidden landmines). These sub-elements contain your unexpressed potential, latent talents, or hidden wealth.

The Columns: The Palaces

The chart is also divided vertically into four columns, typically read from right to left (from Year to Hour). Also known as Palaces, each of these pillars represents a specific domain of your life, categorized by time and people.

These four columns are the Root, Seedling, Flower, and Fruit of your life’s journey.

• Year Pillar (The Root): Represents your ancestry, grandparents, your extended network or industry, and your early childhood (ages 0-15). It is the foundation you were born into.

• Month Pillar (The Seedling): Represents your parents, your immediate career environment, your bosses, and your formative youth (ages 16-30). When we look for your ideal job or how you handle authority, we look here.

• Day Pillar (The Flower): This is the core of the chart. The top character (the Day Master) is you. The bottom character is the Spouse Palace. When we evaluate your romantic partnerships or home life (ages 31-45), we look here.

• Hour Pillar (The Fruit): Represents your children, your subordinates, your investments, your creative ideas, and your late life (ages 45+). When we look at your legacy or what you create, we look here.

How Heaven and Earth Interact

We know the top row is your visible reality, and the bottom row is your hidden foundation. But these rows don’t exist in isolation. They communicate vertically within each Pillar. The relationship between the Heaven and Earth characters in any given Palace dictates whether your life in that area is stable, chaotic, genuine, or an illusion.

There are two primary ways they interact:

• Rooting (Reality vs. Illusion): For a Heavenly Stem (your public reality) to have actual power, it needs to be “rooted” in the Earthly Branch (your hidden foundation) below it. If you have a Wealth element in the top row, and the same element exists in the Earthly Branch below it, your wealth is rooted. What people see is backed up by cold, hard cash in the bank. If that same Wealth element sits on an Earthly Branch that does not support it, it is “floating.” Everyone thinks you are wealthy, but behind closed doors, it’s an illusion.

• Support vs. Sabotage (The Elemental Flow): The elements can also interact through generative or controlling cycles. If the bottom row produces the top row (e.g. a Wood Branch feeding a Fire Stem), your private life actively supports your public ambitions. If the bottom row attacks the top row (e.g. a Water Branch putting out a Fire Stem), there is internal conflict. Your private desires or hidden neuroses are actively sabotaging what you are trying to build on the surface.

Together, this highly interactive grid makes up your Natal Chart, a static picture of who you are detailing your traits, temperament, psychology, and potential.

The Predictive Analytics: Your 10-Year Luck Pillars

Beyond the static Natal Chart, you have the 10-Year Luck Pillars (大运). This is the predictive part of BaZi.

We know that 10-Year Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars (like the Year of the Fire Goat) bring new elemental “weather” into your life. But where does that weather strike? It targets your Palaces.

When a new Zodiac animal arrives in a given year or decade, it interacts with the static grid of your Natal Chart. If an incoming pillar “clashes” with your Month Pillar, it’s not just a vague feeling of bad luck - it is a highly specific trigger targeting your career or matters involving your parents. If an incoming element combines with your Day Pillar, it is targeting your spouse palace.

These incoming Branches act as the keys that spring your locked treasure chests open, forcing your hidden realities to the surface.

The term “Luck Pillars” might be why BaZi is often misunderstood as fatalistic fortune-telling. But it is not. Your chart is not a prophecy that dictates a set future. BaZi can seem predictive because it accurately calculates the natural effects caused by your innate psychology interacting with the changing environment around you.

An unconventional risk-taker is naturally predisposed to peaks and valleys in their finances. A person who is able to work well within traditional systems and authority will likely do well working for a government body or large corporation.

Is a person really destined to be in bad relationships, or are their relationships bad because their unaddressed flaws and neuroses attract bad partners or cause issues in their relationships when one comes along?

BaZi outcomes are fundamentally about cause and effect. What you do in one Luck Pillar highly influences what happens in the next.

A Map of Potential, Not a Destination

“I believe that we have a path that we should take, but that we have free will. We don’t have to make the choice.” - Dr Jane Goodall, iconic primatologist and advocate for conservation and humanitarianism

This brings us to a core concept in Chinese Metaphysics that explains why your chart isn’t a life sentence: The Cosmic Trinity (三才).

Our lives are shaped by three forces:

Heaven Luck - Your BaZi chart, determined at birth

Earth Luck - The environment you are in, or your Feng Shui. This can be where you were born and live, or the home you live in.

Man Luck - Your choices and free will.

Your BaZi chart shows your potential, but your environment and choices dictate if you reach it. Check out more detail on how exactly how the Cosmic Trinity works - and why two people with the exact same BaZi chart can end up with entirely different lives.

If BaZi were truly a fortune-telling tool that allows you to prosper in good times and avoid disasters during unfavourable ones, why aren’t its millions of adherents all millionaires with the perfect relationship and living fulfilled lives?

Because they, like everyone else, are still subject to all three forces. Most people who know their BaZi chart well have not joined the ranks of the ultra-wealthy because not everyone has that capacity in their Heaven Luck. What they can do within that capacity, however, can vary wildly.

The reason two people with the exact same Heaven Luck (BaZi chart) can have wildly different outcomes. A chart showing a person with a sovereign’s destiny can become a King or a CEO, each ruling over a different form of empire.

This is because their Earth and Man luck, in the form of their choices and actions, diverge. Your BaZi chart shows your potential, but only you can decide who you become.

In the summer of 1960, a young woman armed with nothing but a notebook, binoculars, and an unyielding will stepped into the dense canopy of Tanzania's Gombe forest. She had no formal collegiate degree and no backing from the traditional scientific establishment.

Yet, within a few short months, Jane Goodall would make a discovery about chimpanzees that completely shattered our understanding of what it means to be human.

Until that moment, the ability to make and use tools was seen to be the defining trait that separated humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Her discovery proved, undeniably, that we were not the only intelligent beings on the planet.

In response to Goodall’s revolutionary findings, her mentor, the pioneering paleoanthropologist Dr. Louis Leakey, wrote: “[W]e must now redefine man, redefine tool, or accept chimpanzees as human!”

Goodall went on to become an international icon of conservation, fundamentally altering global environmental ethics over an accomplished 65-year career.

How does a woman born in 1934 break gender conventions to go on to become a generational authority on conservation? How does she develop the intellectual rebellion required to change the world from the middle of a jungle? From where does she summon the sheer physical endurance to travel 300 days out of the year for work until the age of 91?

If we look at her destiny through the lens of classical BaZi, her unparalleled resilience, her quiet rebellion, and her legendary journey into the wild were explicitly coded into her astrological blueprint.

Here is the breakdown of the chart of an empathic rebel who redefined humanity’s relationship with the animal kingdom.

Jane Goodall’s BaZi Blueprint

The Core Structure: The Yang Ren (Sheep Blade)

In BaZi (also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny), a person’s astrological DNA is mapped by translating their birth year, month, day, and hour into specific pairings of the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water). The most critical anchor point in this map is the Day Master, which represents the individual's core self and psychology.

Jane Goodall’s Day Master is 甲 (Jia) Yang Wood, the element representing a towering, ancient tree. Born in the 卯 (Mao) Yin Wood month, the absolute peak of Spring, she possesses the formidable Yang Ren (羊刃 - Sheep Blade) structure, an energy of uncompromising strength and extreme endurance. For a young Englishwoman to leave the comfort of her homeland to live by herself for months in the African wilderness requires exactly this level of fierce, unyielding determination.

The Rebel Flame

A chart with this much dense Wood (three Jia stems and a Mao month) evokes the visual of an overgrown, impenetrable forest. Unreleased, this energy becomes rigid and self-destructive.

The chart’s true genius is the solitary 丁 (Ding) Yin Fire sitting on the Month Stem - Goodall’s Hurting Officer (伤官). This provides a brilliant, focused outlet for her immense Wood energy.

Beneath this brilliant output, however, her Earthly Branches possess a highly volatile foundation. Naturally, Water extinguishes Fire. In the earthly branches of her chart, there is a latent water combination and a strong fire combination sitting next to each other, creating an elemental clash.

Furthermore, the specific friction between her Hour (Zi) and Month (Mao) branches creates a chronic, underlying tension known as the “Uncivil Punishment”, while her Day (Chen) and Year (Xu) branches clash directly. Unmitigated, these colliding natural forces would have caused catastrophic instability and endless interpersonal conflict.

The chart is saved by the classical concept of a clear energy flow. Rather than Water and Fire exploding against each other, her massive Wood Day Master and Companion/Peer stars acts as a mediator. Instead of engaging in mutual destruction, the opposing elements flow in a continuous, unbroken chain: Water ➔ Wood ➔ Fire.

This perfectly bridged flow transforms a potential battlefield into an elite configuration known as “Water and Fire Equilibrium” (水火既济). An individual with this balance is, according to the classics: “spiritually and intellectually complete, representing a highly noble structure”.

This dynamic creates a textbook “Hurting Officer Venting Brilliance” (伤官泄秀). Because her Fire is continuously fed by massive Wood but simultaneously tempered by underlying Water, it never burns out in a brief flash of fame. Rather, it channels her unyielding endurance into a sustained, lifelong brilliance in patient observation and public communication.

The Nomadic River and the Global Network

Rather than slowing down with age, Goodall sustained a grueling pace of work throughout her life, keeping her traveling an average of 300 days a year to speak at global events even in her 90s.

In classical BaZi, geographic movement is intrinsically tied to the Water element. Her Hour Branch (Zi) and Day Branch (Chen) naturally resonate to form a constant supply of underground Water.

Her specific combination - a 甲辰 (Jia Chen) day and 甲子 (Jia Zi) hour - creates an “Uprooted” configuration: “Water overflows and wood floats; indicating moving roots and changing leaves”.

In historical societies, “uprooting” was seen as instability. But for Goodall, it is the exact metaphysical blueprint of a woman leaving her native England (”moving roots”) to live a life of constant movement among foreign lands (“changing leaves”).

Furthermore, heavily hydrated Spring Wood develops a restless temperament: “When water generates it (wood) excessively, the temperament becomes wandering and unsettled, leaving the ancestors and moving residences”.

What ancient masters viewed with suspicion as the “instability” of a vagabond translates perfectly today into her highly effective, nomadic global existence.

She did not build this legacy alone. Her Year, Day, and Hour pillars share the exact same Heavenly Stem: Jia (甲) Wood. This triplicate structure explains her ability to inspire and rely upon a massive grassroots network, utilizing thousands of peers and volunteers to execute her vision.

The Earth Vaults: Funding the Mission and Spiritual Depth

Where does the perfectly bridged flow of her chart finally land? It generates Earth. Sustaining her global enterprise requires immense resources, which are unlocked by the collision of her Day Branch (辰 Chen) and Year Branch (戌 Xu).

In BaZi, both of these are Earth “Treasuries” holding her wealth. Ancient texts establish an absolute rule for this to be released: “When Wealth and Official are in the Treasury, without a clash they do not prosper”.

Because the Chen and Xu are separated by another element, and the chart’s combinations further neutralizes the danger of violent destruction, this Chen-Xu clash acts as a highly productive mechanism.

It gently nudges her wealth vaults open, bringing in the massive institutional grants required to sustain her institutes. Yet, because her chart is dominated by Companion stars, the texts dictate this wealth cannot be hoarded - it must be continuously distributed outward to her network and causes.

In real life, how is this wealth practically generated, and what purpose does it serve? In BaZi mechanics, Fire generates Earth. This means her Output produces her Wealth. Practically, her Ding Fire represents her intellectual exhaust: her bestselling books, her documentaries, and her grueling 300-day lecture tours. It is her voice (Fire) that directly produces the institutional funding (Earth).

Crucially, this Earth serves a higher structural purpose: it roots her Day Master. In nature, a towering tree (Jia Wood) cannot stand indefinitely without deep, expansive soil. By converting her intellectual fire into tangible Earth - manifested in the real world as the Jane Goodall Institute and the Roots & Shoots program - she created the literal foundation necessary to anchor her life’s work.

The Spiritual Canopy

Beyond material wealth, these Earth Vaults hold profound metaphysical significance. In BaZi, Xu and Chen represent the Hua Gai (Canopy of Art/Mysticism) stars, denoting an innate connection to the divine, the unseen, and philosophy.

While raised with Christian influences, her Hua Gai stars indicated that she was drawn toward a universal spirituality. Such personalities often seek the higher truths behind the universe.

She found her church in the solitude of the forest, transcending traditional religious dogma. Her depth of thought eventually earned her the prestigious Templeton Prize in 2021 - a prize awarded to scientists who explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind’s purpose.

Her chart is a perfect, self-sustaining loop: her Sheep Blade provides the stamina, her Fire directs the mission, her Water drives her across the globe, her clashing Treasuries fund the operation, and her Spiritual Vaults ground it all in profound, universal meaning.

The Classical Evaluation…and Why The Ancients Would Have Been Wrong About Her

The most fascinating aspect of Goodall’s chart is that if a traditional BaZi master from the 1930s examined it without knowing anything about her, they would likely have pronounced it a disastrous chart, especially for a female.

In Chinese metaphysics, a BaZi chart does not dictate the exact events of your life. It dictates the elemental physics of how you operate. Every chart contains a spectrum of frequencies - from its lowest destructive depths to its highest, most evolved octave.

The vast majority of people ride the baseline of their charts. They weather their personal storms and influence their immediate circles, but do not fundamentally shift the wider world. A minority of individuals descend into the lowest potential of their blueprint, as doing so requires actively surrendering to their worst impulses.

But fewer still manifest the absolute highest potential of their charts. True mastery requires a phenomenal level of self-awareness to identify one’s inherent pathologies, and an iron-clad will to actively harness them rather than be ruled by them.

If Jane Goodall had made different choices, and decided to let her default destiny play out, her life would have been highly chaotic.

She would’ve been a brilliant but difficult employee at a conventional job for a woman of her time. She was likely to clash with management, endlessly criticize flawed systems or fight injustices at the workplace. She would likely have drifted from place to place without a clear purpose.

Classical texts evaluated women’s charts strictly through the lens of patriarchal obedience. The ideal wife’s chart was weak, submissive, and quiet. Goodall’s chart is anything but. Trying to force her roaring, independent energy into a conventional marriage would have been suffocating, likely leading to multiple divorces or a fiercely guarded, bitter isolation.

She might have found that she chronically struggled with finances, feeling that peers, family or even colleagues were constantly taking her resources. Her bank account would resemble a roller coaster track.

At its baseline frequency, this is the chart of the neighborhood eccentric. A highly opinionated, restless wanderer who is undeniably brilliant, but too combative and uprooted to ever build a stable foundation.

Yet, this is the ultimate paradox of modern BaZi: the ancient masters were not wrong about the mechanics, only the context.

In Chinese metaphysics, you cannot truly “transcend” or escape your chart. You can only choose how you manifest it. Jane Goodall did not magically transcend this ostensibly “disastrous” chart. She simply manifested its rebel energies at their absolute highest octave. She sacrificed the traditional confines of 1960s womanhood to become an uncontrollable, unstoppable force of nature.

When I was twenty-four, beginning a promising career in media, a Bazi master looked at my chart and told me I would never be wealthy.

Could I start a successful business? Yes. Would I have a comfortable life? Also yes. But if I wanted the kind of “F**k You money” that lets billionaires get away with (sometimes literal) murder? Absolutely not. My chart was simply not built that way.

This was unacceptable to me. I had grown up surrounded by family eager to take every opportunity to tell me how deficient I was. The message that the only way to receive their approval and respect was through enormous, undeniable material success was deeply ingrained in my psyche.

I hit the master with a barrage of questions, desperately asking if there was a way to become the next Mark Zuckerberg. Looking back, I now appreciate his patience with me trying to argue with the cosmos through him.

Finally, with an aggravated sigh, he told me to appreciate how fortunate my chart was. Extreme wealth, he explained, requires extreme imbalance. For someone to build that kind of empire, something else in their life had to give.

The best kind of life from the view of Bazi is a balanced one where a person lives comfortably, has a happy family, and enjoys good health - a combination almost never found in the charts of the ultra-rich.

It wasn’t until I studied Bazi for myself that I realized what that master was actually trying to communicate.

When we look at a Bazi chart, it is incredibly tempting to search for cosmic permission to be successful. We scan our elemental makeup hoping to find that we can have it all, wealth, power, love, and health.

However, the foundational texts of classical Bazi - while seemingly transactional in their evaluation of Fu (富 - Wealth) and Gui (贵 - Nobility/Authority) - are actually describing extreme psychological profiles.

In our modern pursuit of a flawless destiny, we often conflate the intense, trauma-driven psychological structure required for massive societal success with a completely different concept: Fuqi (福气 - Blessings and Peace).

Understanding the mechanical differences between a mind built for empire, a nervous system plagued by internal friction, and a psyche blessed with in-built emotional regulation fundamentally changes how we view our own potential.

The Illusion of Perfection: Fu, Gui, and the Obsessive Drive

To achieve extreme Fu or Gui according to classical mechanics, a chart cannot be perfectly balanced or peaceful. Psychologically, this means the individual is not well-rounded. They possess immense cognitive clarity (Qing 清) and a highly concentrated, often obsessive, distribution of mental and emotional energy.

Consider the Bazi of Southern Song dynasty Grand Preceptor Shi Hao, preserved in the foundational text Yuan Hai Zi Ping as a prime archetype of a top-tier Fugui destiny.

Shi Hao rose from childhood poverty to attain the absolute pinnacle of political eminence. As Grand Preceptor, he was one of the top three officials in the empire, and he amassed immense wealth. However, because his Jia Wood Daymaster is entirely engulfed by a scorched desert of Fire (intellectual output) and Earth (wealth) with zero Water or Wood for foundational support, his Fugui status came at a steep personal cost.

He was a 'weak wood' tasked with carrying a mountain. He experienced relentless physical and psychological exhaustion. Historical records show he frequently clashed with fellow ministers and military officials, over-exerting his intellect to maintain his footing in an imperial court that was constantly at war for its survival.

Curing an Elite Chart’s “Sickness”

The most powerful charts rely on the concept of ‘Sickness and Medicine’ (病药). In psychological terms, the ‘Sickness’ is a deep, driving core wound or hyper-fixation; the ‘Medicine’ is the potent coping mechanism or external support that channels that wound into achievement.

The best Fugui charts in BaZi tend to feature a ‘Sickness’: “Only when there is a sickness can one be noble. Without injury, it is not extraordinary. If the sickness within the structure is cured, wealth and status will naturally follow.” (有病方为贵，无伤不是奇。格中如去病，财禄两相随)

In Shi Hao’s case, his ‘Sickness’ was the structural imbalance of a rootless Daymaster being crushed by the very wealth and power he wielded. Yet, this extreme concentration of energy demands a heavy toll elsewhere. For all their professional brilliance, individuals with these extreme chart structures often experience profound instability in their personal lives.

Because their psychological resources are funneled so intensely into conquest and innovation, the areas of life requiring softness, compromise, and emotional regulation - like marriage, family, and interpersonal relationships - are often neglected or fraught with conflict. The relentless drive that makes them unparalleled CEOs can easily translate into rigid, demanding, or volatile behavior in their private spheres.

Furthermore, one of the greatest vulnerabilities of an extreme, hyper-focused chart is its fragility in the face of disruption. While the specific metrics of success have evolved since the Ming Dynasty, the underlying psychological reality of this chart structure remains unchanged. How does one man be hailed as a visionary and yet engage in such chaotic self-destruction?

If we look at his destiny through the lens of classical BaZi, we find that his billions, his erratic tweets, and his broken relationships were already written at his birth into a highly volatile, extreme astrological blueprint. He doesn’t have a lucky chart - he has a dangerous one.

While Musk’s exact time of birth remains publicly unconfirmed, the global astrological community widely reverse-engineers his chart to the 7:30 AM to 9:00 AM window. Why? Because of the Hour Pillar. A Note Before we Start

As this the first few case study on this site, I feel explaining some concepts about BaZi is in order, given the polarizing views on Elon Musk.

When I write case studies on people from the lens of Chinese Metaphysics, my personal views on the person should not color the analysis as much as possible. To do so allows personal morality and values to affect my conclusions, which can lead to biased interpretations.

It is important to realise that BaZi is not a system of religion or morality. It does not guarantee karma for people who choose to do bad things, nor does it generate good endings for good people.

A “bad” person can do extraordinary things with their chart, like disrupt a decades-old world order, and they can die peacefully in their bed during a favourable luck cycle. To say they are destined for a sad end is to tell a story for our own comfort, which does not help us get to the truth of things or reflect upon our own modes of thinking.

Ultimately, we can only work on ourselves. Understanding the principles of destiny is an important step towards finding acceptance with what happens in the wider world, and making our own peace - or strategy for change - with it.

The Blueprint of a Billionaire

Many people have wealth generating structures in their astrological charts, but reaching the billionaire tier requires a highly specific cognitive architecture. One capable of supporting massive accumulation, has uninterrupted favourable luck pillars - and the strength to manage it all without completely collapsing the individual’s sanity.

In BaZi, Musk’s core identity (his “Day Master”) is Wood. However, he was born in the dead of summer, a season of blazing Fire.

In classical BaZi, the season of your birth dictates your dominant psychological profile. For a Wood person, summer Fire represents the “Hurting Officer” star. This is the ultimate cognitive engine of the rebel. It governs a blazing intellect, unfiltered expression, and an obsessive need to dismantle the status quo.

Musk’s chart also features a textbook pattern known as “Hour-based Indirect Wealth.” In BaZi, Direct Wealth is a steady paycheck. Indirect Wealth is venture capital, massive equity, and sudden windfalls - it has no ceiling.

Even more fascinating, ancient texts describe his Day Master with his specific birth hour as “Heavenly Wealth sitting on a Treasury.” His chart contains the Chen (Dragon) branch, which acts as a literal, psychological vault. He is cognitively wired to hoard, guard, and compartmentalize his assets.

But the ancient formula encoded in his chart dictates a brutal reality: Wealth locked in a vault must be violently shattered open. Classical texts state: “When Wealth is in the Treasury, without a clash, it does not prosper.”

Psychologically, this means Musk cannot generate wealth peacefully. His billionaire status is the mathematical result of external crises arriving to violently clash with his chart. The ancient texts explicitly warn that if an exhausted mind attempts to carry extreme power, it brings disaster rather than a blessing. It leads to the phenomenon of being “a poor person living in a rich house” - an individual who holds unimaginable external power but is internally starved for peace, leading to intense paranoia, isolation, and burnout.

How He Survived Being Crushed

If his chart is too weak to carry the billions, how did Musk actually build Tesla and SpaceX without completely destroying himself?

He survived because of a profound psychological hardening that occurred during his most critical empire-building years: 1998 to 2017.

He was no longer fighting internal boards. As the unquestioned leader of SpaceX and Tesla, his environment finally matched his massive ego. He possessed the exact structural resilience to stand face-to-face with lethal pressure and absorb it. He constantly chose maximum risk, flawlessly executing the ancient BaZi maxim: “Borrowing the (7) Killings to forge Authority.”

The Calm Before the Storm

Between 2008 and 2017, Musk’s BaZi chart and mindset were perfectly calibrated for extreme endurance. Chinese Metaphysics has a mysticism problem.

If you walk into a traditional consultation, you are usually met with cryptic warnings, vague reassurances, and no small amount of talk about elemental combinations, clashes, wealth stars and structures with flowery names like Green Dragon Hiding its Form (青龙伏形).

It can sound like magic and fortunetelling. To the most skeptical of minds, it can come across as a retrofitting scam.

But if you strip away the cultural packaging and folklore, what you are actually looking at is one of the most sophisticated, ancient systems of algorithmic pattern recognition in human history.

Since the Han dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE), Eastern scholars have systematically mapped correlations between celestial phenomena, temporal cycles, and human affairs using the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, Yin-Yang theory, and the Five Phases (五行).

Over centuries, these theories were refined and recorded as foundational rules in classical texts. From a practitioner’s perspective, BaZi is a complex, multi-variable framework designed to decode the patterns of time.

Unfortunately, due to a combination of historical factors and superstition, empirical validation at scale was not possible. There was no massive dataset collection verifying life events against different types of charts.

A human practitioner, no matter how skilled, is limited by their own cognitive bandwidth. With nearly 13 million possible chart permutations, keeping track of every clash, combination, and elemental shift is mathematically daunting.

Masters had at best, hundreds to thousands of charts from their own clients, and most had no inclination nor ability to properly store the data, follow up with all his clients and evaluate his database at scale.

Not helping matters, modern pop-astrology bypasses this complexity, spitting out generic, watered-down daily horoscopes based on single variables that apply to millions of people at once.

Today, with the practice of Data Science and powerful AI models becoming more accessible, we may finally be able to process these patterns at scale.

Instead of relying on human memory, we can use computational power to map the permutations, track real-world outcomes, and test these ancient correlations against actual data. We finally have the tools to synthesize thousands of years of observation and move this ancient system from subjective interpretation to empirically validated theory.

Enter Natural Language Processing

Studying data science, I realized that modern AI architecture - specifically Large Language Models (LLMs) - is the perfect tool to bridge this gap.

However, you cannot just feed a BaZi chart into a generic AI and expect it to provide good answers. The internet is flooded with contradictory, shallow astrology content, and a standard AI will scrape all of it.

When I started using AI to read my chart, it was constantly hallucinating clashes and combinations that do not actually exist in classical theory, or made up fanciful theories to (erroneously) explain why my chart worked the way it did.

To fix this, I am building a custom AI framework for Scripting Destiny. It avoids modern pop astrology to use information strictly from the foundational texts of BaZi.

When my system reads a chart, it isn’t guessing based on intuition. It synthesizes thousands of years of classical rules to provide a clean, mathematically sound baseline of your elemental structures.

The second step - translating the data in a manner relevant to you - requires understanding modern life. This is where general AI becomes incredibly powerful, provided you know how to constrain it.

The Human + Machine Laboratory

I don’t just blindly trust the algorithm. Scripting Destiny is an active laboratory, and my own life is the primary case study.

Data without lived experience is just theory, so I test the classical rules in real-time. I have mapped out how significant past events in my life corresponded to years with favorable and unfavorable elements, tracking the exact months in which major decisions were made and when they finally bore fruit. But more importantly, I am forward-testing the data right now.

A business can fail for a hundred mundane reasons, so I am not looking at the launch of this publication as a binary test of “success” or “failure.” Instead, I am tracking the specific terrain. If my chart predicts a month of severe ‘Resource’ friction, I will document whether this platform actually encounters administrative bottlenecks, infrastructure issues, or technical failures during that exact window.

If BaZi is the source code of your life - a rigid matrix of eight elements determined the exact second you are born - then any logical mind will eventually arrive at a massive system anomaly:

With 8 billion people on the planet, thousands of babies are born within the exact same two-hour window every single day. They all possess the exact same four pillars.

If BaZi is an accurate system for determining destiny, they should experience the exact same successes, marry the same type of person, and fail at the same exact moments.

But they don’t. In fact, the same chart indicating a person is capable of wielding great authority could yield a highly-regarded judge, or a widely-feared mafia boss.

That is because a BaZi chart does not operate in a vacuum. It may be a static set of base stats, but how those stats actually perform depends entirely on the environment the person finds themselves in, and the actions of the user they belong to.

To understand how this works, we have to look at the classical architecture of human reality: the San Cai (三才), or the Cosmic Trinity.

Destiny’s Determinants: Heaven, Earth, and Human

Classical Chinese Metaphysics texts note that while BaZi can be used to predict a person’s destiny, these predictions are never 100% accurate because the BaZi chart belongs to only one part of the San Cai.

A person’s ultimate path in life is shaped by the combined influence of this Cosmic Trinity:

• Heaven (Tian - 天): This represents your given destiny and the natural timing of the universe. Your BaZi chart is considered “Heaven Luck”. It represents your inherent strengths, your blind spots, and the fixed 10-year timelines (Da Yun) you will pass through. This part of your destiny is immutable.

• Earth (Di - 地): This represents the environmental influence on your life. If BaZi is the seed, Earth Luck is the soil. You can have the chart of a highly successful entrepreneur, but if you were born to parents with little resources to support your dreams, in a region with little access to capital or economic infrastructure, your “empire” might be a highly successful, localized street stall rather than a global tech unicorn. Essentially, the geographic and societal constraints or advantages of your environment all fall into the “Earth Luck” category. You have moderate control over this - you can move house, migrate to another city, or rearrange your immediate workspace to optimize your environment.

• Human (Ren - 人): This represents your free will, personal actions, and moral compass. It encompasses your individual character and the deeds you choose to perform throughout your life. This is the area over which you have the most control in navigating your destiny.

Together, these factors form the three important parts of the whole destiny concept of Heaven, Earth, and Human. This is why even if two people share the exact same BaZi (Heaven luck), their lives will still differ based on their environment (Earth luck) and their personal choices and actions (Human luck).

The Emperor's Chart: One Destiny, Four Outcomes

A common story told by BaZi masters to illustrate the different ways in which BaZi charts manifest involves the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Yuanzhang.

Shortly after overthrowing the previous dynasty and claiming power, the emperor grew paranoid. He realized that if his BaZi chart indicated an “emperor’s destiny,” there must be other men in the nation born at the exact same time who possessed the same chart.

Viewing them as a potential threat to his throne, he ordered a nationwide search for every man who shared his BaZi chart.

The search yielded three men who shared his exact same “emperor’s destiny.”

The first was a merchant. He had built a vast, highly successful business empire.

Next was the nation’s head monk. He held supreme religious authority, ruling over the country’s temples, akin to a Pope.

Finally, a beggar. But not just any beggar. He was the leader of the Beggar Sect, which made him the unofficial “King of Beggars”.

All four men had become the ruler of their respective areas. The logic of the chart, showing a sovereign’s destiny, played out perfectly.

But their Earth Luck (where and to whom they were born) and their Man Luck (their education, their actions, their life choices) determined the actual scale and context of their empires.

Realizing he had nothing to worry about, the emperor let the three men go.

The Role of BaZi in Your Destiny

Understanding that you have free will does not render your BaZi chart useless. In fact, it makes it infinitely more valuable.

You cannot outwork a bad energetic environment if you don’t know your limitations. If you are entering a 10-year luck pillar (Da Yun) that actively clashes with your wealth element, no amount of positive thinking or “Man Luck” is going to stop the financial turbulence.

But if you see that clash coming in your chart, you can use your free will to deploy mitigating strategies. You can liquidate risky assets, choose not to quit your job, or focus on learning new knowledge rather than aggressive expansion. A bad luck pillar can be a growth opportunity or a time of preparation.

If you see a highly favorable luck pillar, start preparing to take advantage of it. Start building, networking, putting in systems that can capture opportunities and wealth when the good years arrive. It is highly possible to “waste” a good luck pillar without realising that the ease of your life is not a permanent state.

You cannot change your source code or when it starts developing bugs. But you are the SysAdmin, you get to decide how it runs and how to fix it.

If you’ve ever played a role-playing game (RPG) of any sort, you know the most important part happens before the game even begins: Character Creation.

You choose a class. You establish your base stats. You allocate extra points to stats like Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence. These numbers dictate how you will interact with the game world. A high-Charisma bard talks their way past the guards. A high-Strength barbarian simply removes the door. We accept these principles and archetypes as a core mechanic of the genre.

But what if the real world operates on a similar, highly structured set of background variables?

That’s what BaZi（八字）is. A Chinese Metaphysics system that generates a person’s “stat sheet” at birth.

Also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, BaZi isn’t a personality test. It is a set of 8 elements determined by the Year, Month, Day and Hour a person was born. Put together in a 4x2 grid (hence four pillars), it creates a map of potential for your life.

The system worked so well for the ancients that the art spread across East Asia. You may have seen it in action on the Korean reality show Battle of Fates as Saju (Four Pillars), or heard about Shichū Suimei (Deducing Destiny by the Four Pillars) in Japan. The Vietnamese know it as Tử vi Tứ Trụ (Astrology of the Four Pillars).

It is common for people in Asia to consult masters with their birth info, and use the information to make major life decisions. The most successful masters often consult for conglomerates, and their advice can factor into corporate decisions made by CEOs.

Contrary to popular misconception, BaZi is not a mystical fortune-telling tool. It is a map of your cognitive baseline.

Just like an open-world RPG, how you navigate your environment depends on how your base stats process information. For example, a chart with a hyper-active 'Output' structure doesn't just mean you are creative. Psychologically, it operates much like a hyperactive attention span - brilliant, but difficult to focus. Similarly, an overloaded 'Earth' structure can manifest as severe executive dysfunction, trapping the player in analysis paralysis.

Using BaZi to understand our cognitive baseline and how we can manage them to achieve real world outcomes is where we can start scripting our own destiny.

Deriving Your Base Stats

To understand BaZi, we have to strip away the pop-mysticism and look at its foundational manuals. Texts like the Zi Ping Zhen Quan (子平真诠), or The True Interpretation of Zi Ping, don’t read like magical grimoires. They read like technical documentation for a complex system, with logic trees and if/then/else as well as and/or rules for reading a chart. In other words, the game’s underlying ruleset or code.

At the exact moment of your birth, the universe was running a specific “build” of time and space. BaZi translates the year, month, day, and hour of your birth into an eight-character base stat matrix. This matrix represents the elemental variables present when your unique campaign began.

In RPG terms, the universe is a Dungeon Master (DM) who has determined what your base stats are according to its ruleset. The DM has also planned out the general outline of your life’s campaign, determining what kind of energetic weather and terrain you’ll encounter along the way.

You are the player. It is up to you to figure out what to do with those stats and how to navigate the environment you find yourself in. You can choose to optimize your build, compensate for your weaknesses, and make strategic efforts to get the best ending possible. Or you can choose to simply roll the dice and accept the easy “average” ending. Choose to ignore the limits of your stats, or make reckless decisions in a hostile environment? Then it’s the bad ending.

Elemental Dynamics: More Than Just “Magic”

In gaming, elements are usually just damage types - fire burns, water freezes. In BaZi, as outlined in the legendary Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), the Five Elements (五行) are actually fundamental kinetic forces. They are the physics that govern how your specific character sheet interacts with the world.

Instead of “luck,” think of these as Elemental Dynamics:

• Wood: The force of growth, expansion, and networking. It represents outward momentum, bending and adapting as it does so.

• Metal: The force of structure, boundaries, and execution. As the classics note, Metal is unyielding but moldable - once forged, it cuts through noise to establish order.

• Fire: The force of illumination, transformation and destruction. It makes things visible, its expression restless and rapid.

• Water: The force of flow, data accumulation, and adaptability. It finds the path of least resistance, governs wisdom and stores deep information.

• Earth: The force of storage, stability, and buffering. It is the base that holds the other elements in place.

Your BaZi chart reveals how these variables interact. Do you have a highly volatile Wood/Fire build that constantly seeks stimulation, requiring Water-based cooling mechanisms like meditation or deep focus to regulate your behavior? Or do you have a rigid Metal/Water structure prone to analysis paralysis, requiring the external Fire of a scheduled public performance to initiate action?

The 10-Year Patch Cycle: Surviving the “Da Yun”

These are patches from the universe that changes the meta of your life, or a new environment that your DM has put you in. In a tabletop campaign, your character eventually moves from one environment to another. An enchanted staff that worked perfectly in an open forest becomes a massive liability in a cramped, underground cavern. A stealth skill that was useless in a bright, open desert becomes a lifesaver when you enter a crowded, shadow-filled city.

In BaZi, this change in energetic environment is called your Da Yun (大运）, or 10-Year Luck Pillars.

The San Ming Tong Hui (三命通会), or The Comprehensive Book of the Three Destinies, makes it clear. The cognitive baseline of your natal chart is static, but your Da Yun is dynamic. Every ten years, the campaign setting shifts, and the elemental environment around you changes.

This isn’t about “good luck” or “bad luck.” It is a shift in the cosmic weather. A specific 10-year pillar might introduce heavy Water elements - the kinetic force of data accumulation and fluidity - into your life. If your cognitive baseline lacks the structural boundaries to contain it, this sudden influx of Water will systematically flood your chart.

Psychologically, this manifests as extreme analysis paralysis, overwhelming anxiety, and a complete loss of operational focus. You find yourself drowning in endless options and overthinking, unable to execute or hold your ground. Instead of a period of smooth advancement, the campaign difficulty spikes, plunging you into a frustrating environment where your primary objective shrinks from strategic expansion to mere cognitive survival.

Under such circumstances, it is unlikely that any major success can be achieved, fulfilling the “prediction” of working hard for little gain in the classical texts.

Unlike a video game, the simulation doesn’t guarantee you a balanced experience. Because the 10-year patches move in massive, sequential blocks, you might face a 30-year run of hostile energetic environments. There is no cosmic guarantee that ‘good luck’ is waiting around the corner.

But this is exactly why you need to understand the rulebook. When you understand your chart’s psychology and how it reacts to external events, a harsh cycle isn’t a mysterious curse. It is a known environmental hazard.

If you know you are entering a 10-year pillar that starves your system of resources, you don’t wait for the DM to ‘reward’ you with fortuitous encounters. You artificially introduce those resources yourself and time major decisions for favorable periods within the decade. You change your industry, you alter your environment, and you deploy the exact elemental strategies required to keep your character advancing until the campaign setting changes again.

Playing the Meta: Strategy Over Fortune

This is where the paradigm shifts. When you understand your BaZi chart through the lens of data, classical mechanics and how they affect your psyche, you stop asking fortune-teller questions like, “Will I be rich?” or “When will I find love?”

Instead, you start thinking like a strategist:

• “Is the current 10-year meta favoring my build?”

• “What elemental resources do I lack? How can I generate and introduce them into my environment?”

• “If my current patch makes aggressive expansion highly risky, should I pivot to resource gathering and defense for the next three years?”

BaZi isn’t about surrendering to a pre-written fate. It’s about reading the campaign module ahead of time and preparing to leverage it or adapt. It is the original character sheet, designed to help you navigate the environment, optimize your build, and ultimately, script your own destiny.
